Damaging Effects of Sun on Skin
Exposure to ultraviolet light from sunlight accounts for nearly all of the symptoms of premature skin aging. Other skin changes, once believed to be caused by natural aging, are now known to be a result of prolonged exposure to the sun, called photo aging.
The ultraviolet radiation from the sun that reaches your skin—is divided into two categories: UVA and UVB, based on their wavelengths. The more energetic UVB rays are the primary agents for sunburn and do most of their damage in the uppermost layers of living skin. The UVB rays have been closely linked to skin cancer. The far more abundant UVA rays have less energy but penetrate deeper into skin, damaging the underlying cells and supporting collagen fibers.
Both UVA and UVB cause damage to the skin's DNA. Damaged skin cells begin a cascade of wounding responses. that leads to premature aging. If the DNA damage is not repaired properly, the skin cell loses its ability to function correctly and that leads to premature aging. The cascade of wounding responses has many effects on skin cells, structures and systems:
- Cells release enzymes that break down collagen at a faster rate, causing collagen fibers to fray and stretch. The result is a disorganized network of collagen fibers, known as solar scars which make the healing process more difficult. When the skin repeats this imperfect rebuilding process over years of sun exposure, wrinkles develop.
- Melanocytes are stimulated to make pigment (melanin) in the skin. In youth, for some, the result may be a tan. But during the photo aging process, the melanocytes lose their strict controls, and uneven pigmentation occurs. This appears as light spots or as dark brown areas, called age or sun spots, where they make too much melanin.
- Blood vessels in the skin's surface permanently dilate and their walls thin. They appear as broken capillaries and spider veins (telangectasia) typically, on the face and legs.
- The upper layer of skin fills up with flaky dead layers that do not hold moisture. The skin appears sallow and dry, exaggerating the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
- The Damaged cells may begin to divide and grow out of control, causing skin cancer.
- The skin's immune system is suppressed, severely reducing the skin's ability to eliminate damage or protect from invading cells and toxins.
